The International Labour Organization (ILO) highlights five critical areas that need to be addressed to foster harmonious industrial relations between employers and workers.
**Social Protection:** The Employment Injury Scheme, currently being piloted for garment workers, should be institutionalized, legislated, and gradually expanded to other sectors. Establishing a comprehensive social protection system in line with ILO conventions will enhance workers' safety and well-being while improving Bangladesh's global competitiveness.
**Occupational Safety and Health (OSH):** The ILO urges the Government of Bangladesh to ratify OSH conventions No. 155 and No. 187 and to develop a comprehensive national OSH framework. This initiative will foster a culture of safety across all sectors of the economy.
The ILO calls on all stakeholders to collaborate in improving the industrial relations system through constructive social dialogue. Such collaboration is vital not only for the stability of the ready-made garment (RMG) sector but also for the overall economic and social well-being of Bangladesh. With collective effort and commitment, there is optimism that peaceful and productive industrial relations can be achieved, benefiting all parties involved.
On September 26, 2024, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo met with Dr. Mohammad Yunus, the Honourable Chief Adviser, to discuss the priorities of the interim government. Their discussions centered on employment creation, labor reforms, and the ILO's role in supporting these initiatives.
The ILO remains committed to assisting Bangladesh in its pursuit of sustainable and inclusive economic growth, emphasizing the importance of decent work, labor rights, and social justice.
